A note on sources

We looked for a government page that defines net-30 terms. We did not find a sentence we could quote word for word. So the meaning above is this guide's own wording. Each vendor writes its own terms, so read the vendor's page before you buy.

The timeline

Here is a made-up example to show the idea.

DayWhat happens
Day 0The vendor sends the invoice.
Day 1 to 29You can pay at any time.
Day 30The due date.

If the invoice is dated the 1st of a month, count 30 days forward to find the due date. Write that date down on the day the invoice arrives.

Reading an invoice

Look for four things on every invoice.

  • The invoice date.
  • The terms, which may read "net 30".
  • The amount.
  • How the vendor wants to be paid.

If any line is not clear, ask the vendor before the due date. Keep the answer in writing.

What a vendor may do if a bill is late

Each vendor sets its own rules. Some may charge a fee. Some may not. We have no primary source on this, so we make no claim. Look in the vendor's terms.

Where a payment record can come in

After you pay, a payment can be written down in a record. Factiiv says, "Build business credibility through everyday trade activities and easily monitor your reputation with Factiiv." It also says, "Establish and report the credibility of your business with every transaction."

Reporting is a step, not a result. We make no promise about what any lender or vendor will do with a record. Read how trade payments are reported and what is Factiiv.

How Red Spectrum uses net-30 terms

Red Spectrum is a membership for small business owners in the United States. A member gets a net-30 vendor account and spends it on real business services from our catalog. Every membership payment and every catalog repayment is reported to Factiiv. We report to Factiiv and nowhere else.

No guarantee of funding, loan approval or credit scores. Payment activity is reported to Factiiv.
