What is a business listing?
Short answer: In this guide, a business listing is a web page or entry that shows details about a business, such as its name, address and phone number.

What a listing holds
Think of a listing as a small card about your business. The card sits on a website. People can read it when they look you up.
A card often shows three things: the business name, the address and the phone number. We call these name, address, phone, or NAP. Read what is NAP for more.
What Google Help says
Google runs Business Profiles. This guide uses its help page as a source, and does not speak for Google.
Google says what a business can enter. One item is "Your full address, if your business has a location that customers can visit." Not every business has a place customers visit. Read the Google page to see what applies to you.
Google also says, "Businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results." And it says, "If your business info isn't accurate, your Business Profile might not show up for relevant searches in your area."
Those sentences are about Google Business Profile. We make no promise about where any business will show up, and we do not say these sentences apply to other sites.
Where listings live
Listings can live in many places on the web. A directory site may hold one. A map site may hold one. We have no primary source that counts or ranks the places, so we make no claim about which matter most.
A simple way to check yours
- Write down your business name, address and phone number exactly as you want them shown.
- Search for your business name online.
- Open each result that shows your business.
- Compare the details with your written copy.
- Note any that differ.
If a listing is wrong, the site that holds it usually has a way to ask for a change. Look on that site.

Questions people ask
Is a business listing the same as a website?
No. A listing is a small entry about your business on another site. A website is your own.
Why should the details be accurate?
Google says, "If your business info isn't accurate, your Business Profile might not show up for relevant searches in your area." That is about Google's own profiles.
Does Google promise that accurate details will rank me?
No. Google says "more likely," and we make no promise about any result.
